Umbria: the Region to be discovered
Since always the meeting between histories and cultures has contributed to mold Umbria’s identity. The Saint Umbria, the Warrior Umbria, the Green Umbria: all adjectives which describe this land but, if taken alone, are not able to enclose the several aspects. Perugia and the other cities are able to offer to visitors a rich artistic and cultural heritage, immersed in a fascinating landscape.
Perugia
Perugia is a small jewel which keeps artistic and monumental treasures which testify the rich past and justify the cultural primacy of Italy. Even if it keeps the aspect and the rhythm of a small medieval village, Perugia has a busy life, linked, overall, to the presence of one of the oldest Italian University, founded in 1308.
Assisi
Assisi is one of the most visited city of Umbria, especially for religious purposes as it has been residential town for Saint Francis and Santa Chiara. In addition to Basilica of San Francis and Santa Chiara Church you must visit Minerva Temple, the palace “Capitano del Popolo” and the huge Rocca Maggiore, just outside the walls of the town.
Gubbio
The limestone blocs with which Gubbio has been built provide to the village the appellation of “grey city”: it is the oldest part of Umbria which has kept, both in the buildings and in the streets as well, its medieval aspect. Starting from Piazza Grande, a tour among the monuments, Palazzo dei Consoli and Palazzo del Capitolo towards the Dome allows you to discover all the magics of this Umbrian village.
Todi
Elegant medieval city, Todi lays austere and wistful, upon the hill which overlooks the amazing Tevere’s valley. In Piazza del Popolo, ancient location of the Roman Forum, you can visit the Dome, Palazzo dei Priori, Palazzo del Capitano and Palazzo del Popolo. Just outside the city, on the low side, you can visit Tempio di Santa Maria della Consolazione.
Orvieto
The perfect tune between Orvieto and the rock of tufa among which it has been built is an amazing example of harmonious integration between nature and human action. The visit of the town could start from the Dome, through Rocca and Pozzo di San Patrizio; walking through Corso Cavour, you reach Piazza del Popolo, where act as starts Palazzo del Popolo and Palazza Papali.
Spoleto
From the ancient origin, you can visit in Spoleto the Teatro Romano, Druso Arch and the Paleo-Cristian Cgurch of San Salvatore. Cappella Eroli and Cappella delle Reliquie are other two important spots to be visited: the first one will offer you the possibility to admire Pinturicchio operas while the second keeps in its interiors the statute Madonna col Bambino.
Spello
Spello born on one of the Monte Subasio’s spur, which provides to the overall town an amazing colour thanks to its pink stone. As for Spoleto, also in Spello ruins of Roman period live together with the one coming from Middle Age period. The ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre and of the Theater are inside the medieval walls where there are perfectly conserved Porta Consolare and Porta Urbica.
Terni
Terni lays on a huge plain where Serra river and Nera river meet each other. From its past, Terni conserves monuments as Chiesa di San Salvatore and the Roman Cathedral but the futuristic tower that lays on Palazzo Comunale Vecchio testifies a city which looks ahead. For the ones who visit Terni, a visit to Marmore falls is deserved. The cascade has been created by the Romans to allow Velino River to flow.
Clitunno Springs
The Clitunnio Sources are the other important natural spot of the Region: this underground springs born in Campiello, between Spoleto and Foligno, along Via Flaminia and flows for over 60 kms to reach an affluent of Tevere.
